Thanks to its working-class heritage, Philadelphia stands out as the host city offering the best value for money during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, while other venues face scrutiny over exorbitant prices.

The city that made Rocky Balboa famous—the beloved boxer portrayed by Sylvester Stallone—boasts affordable transportation, accommodation, and dining options. Its prices come as a relief, especially after New Jersey’s transit company controversially increased train fares eightfold to $105 for spectators heading to MetLife Stadium on the outskirts of New York.

In contrast, visitors to Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field need only pay $2.90 for a subway ride, with return trips free under a partnership with Airbnb.

“We want to ensure that the city remains accessible and affordable for fans… If we charge excessive transportation costs, we exclude an entire segment of the population,” Deputy Mayor Vanessa Garrett Harley told AFP.

Eleven U.S. cities will host matches in the tournament, co-organized by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The event kicks off on June 11 and concludes on July 19.

Fear of high costs prompted FIFA to announce an additional $100 million fund to help the 48 participating teams cover expenses, following concerns from national federations about potential financial losses. The steep ticket prices, significantly higher than those for the 2022 Qatar World Cup, have angered fans already facing substantial costs in megacities like New York and Los Angeles.

For fans without tickets, Philadelphia will offer a free “fan festival” throughout the World Cup, allowing 15,000 attendees daily to watch matches, enjoy food stalls, and participate in entertainment activities.

The city of 1.6 million has long struggled with high crime rates, but authorities note that homicides have dropped considerably in recent years. As the World Cup approaches, Philadelphia is racing against time amid road construction in several areas and scaffolding still present at the major 30th Street Station, which is preparing for a significant influx of visitors.

Still, the city is confident it will capitalize on the situation, especially as prices skyrocket elsewhere in the U.S. “It’s still possible to find a mid-range hotel in Philadelphia around July 4 for about $400 a night, and $200 for a basic room,” said Anne Ryan, deputy secretary of the Pennsylvania tourism office. While high, these prices remain below those in other host cities.

A study by The Athletic revealed that hotel room rates in Houston surged 457% for its first World Cup match, and 364% in Kansas City. In Philadelphia, the increase is still significant but more modest at 198%.

Anne Ryan assured that “there will be no price gouging at hotels,” adding that Philadelphia offers the best value in the U.S. “There’s simply no comparison,” she said.

“Philadelphia is a hardworking city, a gritty city, a working-class city, and we’re very proud of that,” said Meg Kane, head of the competition’s organization in what was once the first capital of the United States. She highlighted that the city’s diverse food scene can “accommodate all price levels,” further enhancing its appeal.
