Shenhua’s Foreign Striker Gaye Successfully Undergoes Achilles Surgery in Shanghai

Posted on: 05/13/2026

Shanghai Shenhua’s Senegalese forward, Gaye, has successfully undergone surgery on his ruptured Achilles tendon at Huashan Hospital in Shanghai, bringing relief to the club and its fans. The injury occurred during a Chinese Super League match against Chengdu Rongcheng on May 1, when Gaye landed awkwardly after contesting a header, suffering a complete tear of his left Achilles tendon. This setback sidelines him for an extended period.

Following Gaye’s request, the club arranged for the surgery at Huashan Hospital, performed by a leading specialist in sports medicine. The procedure went smoothly, with no postoperative fever or wound pain reported. Under expert guidance, Gaye began rehabilitation exercises the day after surgery, crucial for preventing adhesions and maintaining muscle strength to avoid atrophy.

Now recovering at the Shenhua training base in Kangqiao, Gaye is working closely with the club’s medical team and physiotherapists on his rehabilitation, supported by his wife. A decision on whether he will seek further recovery abroad has yet to be made.

With Gaye likely missing the remainder of the season, Shenhua is considering roster adjustments when the secondary transfer window opens on June 18. Having used all six foreign player slots, the club may recall Asue, who is on loan at Spanish second-division club Leganés until June 30. Asue has made 13 appearances for Leganés this season, scoring two goals, and recently netted a header after coming off the bench against Santander, showing good form. If he returns, he could feature in Shenhua’s 16th-round match against Dalian Yingbo on June 28. Earlier injury concerns for Asue have now resolved.

After 11 rounds of the CSL, Shenhua sits sixth with 11 points. Asue’s potential return would allow time for integration with the team ahead of the season’s second half.
